Pupils race to fundraise for Sport Relief
Pupils at The Olive School, Blackburn set themselves a tough Sport Relief Challenge – to run all 3,602 miles to World Cup host nation Russia!
Every lunchtime during Sport Relief Week (17 to 23 March), pupils and staff at the Meins Road primary school ran laps of the playground to clock up over three and a half thousand miles between us.
Infant pupils each ran two laps of the playground daily, while the juniors completed three laps each.
Julie Bradley, Principal of The Olive School, Blackburn, explained, “Our Sport Relief challenge combined our school’s love of football with fundraising. We wanted to do something unique for the charity this year and decided to look ahead to this summer’s World Cup.
“Our pupils embraced the activity, doing their laps of the playground every lunchtime during Sport Relief week, whatever the weather. It was great to see everyone working together to help The Olive School achieve its goal of clocking up 3,602 miles – and raising much needed funds for Sport Relief.”
The Olive School pupils asked their families to sponsor them for the number of laps they ran. The school also sold Sport Relief wristbands to raise additional funds to help the charity tackle critical issues affecting people across the UK and the rest of the world.
In total our school community raised £193.63 for Sport Relief.
Year 4 pupil Zaynab Bala said, “The run has been fabulous and has made me happy because I am doing it for charity. It was fun as I have a lot of energy to burn and it made me more focused in class.”
Year 2 pupil Zoya Shahid added, “When I ran around the playground, it was so much fun. I ran with my class and it was funny to see the teachers run too.”
