Ibn Thaabit

Hello everyone from Ibn Thaabit

It is now the end of our second term in year 1 and we are all very excited and keen to keep learning in the summer term. There are still so many things to look forward to and learn in this next half term. Here is what we have been up to.

In English, we have been learning about non-fiction books, in particular one about the United Kingdom! We learnt about the Union flag and how it was made from the flags of three different countries. We found out lots of information and we were even lucky enough to try different foods from each country including followed a recipe to make our own yummy scones. This English unit also fits in nicely with our Geography topic about the UK and we even got the opportunity to welcome a Scottish visitor to our school who played the bagpipes for us. It was very loud but exciting!

In Maths we have been learning about numbers to 40 and how we can use the Diennes with tens and ones to represent to numbers to 40 and compare them. This has been very challenging but we like the challenge.

In Science, we have been learning all about materials, which materials are natural or man-made and describing properties of different materials. We had fun investigating which materials were waterproof and would be most suitable to make an umbrella. We also investigated what materials were magnetic and used a range of materials. We were very confused when not all of the metal objects were magnetic!

In DT we have been learning all about moving pictures. We made moving clocks to practise and then we made our own moving picture with a lever or pivot to move the picture. This was great fun to plan and make!
