Children celebrate the wonder of words for World Book Day

Pupils and teachers dressed up as their favourite literary characters to highlight the joys of reading as they celebrated World Book Day on 7 March.

World Book Day is a global celebration of storytelling and reading. Held annually on the first Thursday in March in the UK, World Book Day sees schoolchildren and teachers alike dress up as their favourite characters from well-known tales, and share stories they love.

The mini bookworms were asked to bring in one of their favourite tomes to share with friends and teachers in order to show how magical books can be. Teachers also swapped classrooms to read passages from books to children in different year groups.

Pupils dressed up as characters including Bananaman, The Cat in the Hat, Violet Beauregarde, Mary Poppins, Willy Wonka, Peter Pan, Harry Potter, Oompah Loompahs and Gangsta Granny.

Acting Principal Susannah Berry said:

“Good reading habits start early and children who share books with others are more likely to develop language skills and advanced reading levels. We want to engender in our pupils a lifelong love of reading and literacy to fire up their creativity and imaginations. The pupils really enjoy getting dressed up for World Book Day each year and there were some fantastic costumes worn. It is a fun way to encourage all our pupils to become avid readers.”
